The 411 on Chemical Peels
The idea of a "chemical peel" scares a lot of people because they think that it will be painful, they're afraid that their skin will be red and irritated for days, and they expect sheets of skin to be peeling off their face in a way that they won't want to be seen in public. Clients often ask if they can expect to end up like Samantha on Sex and the City...
While it’s true that some peels on the market are aggressive, you don't have to worry about any of that when you receive a peel at Skin Sanctuary! The peels we use are gentle yet effective and there's little to no downtime!

FAQ
Who can get a peel?
Almost everyone! Peels are made for all skin types and tones, even those with sensitive skin. If you have been on Accutane within the last year or are currently breastfeeding or pregnant, a peel is not recommended at this time. There also should not be any broken skin in the area that’s being treated.
What are the benefits of a peel?
Professional peels have a large number of benefits, some that can be noticed, and some that subtly occur under the surface of the skin
Reduced visible fine lines & wrinkles
Fewer acne breakouts
Diminished discoloration and more even skin tone
Increased cell turnover process
Softer, smoother skin
How many peels should I do to see results?
You can see results after just 1 peel but I recommend a series of 3 to 6 peels to start because you'll see more significant results this way. We'll take pictures at each appointment so you can see your progress as you progress through the treatments.
How do you prep for a peel?
For the best results, you will want to prep your skin with a home care regimen containing a brightening ingredient, like vitamin c, and retinol. I strongly recommend using Cosmedix’s skin prep kits that are designed for this purpose for 2 weeks. You’ll want to discontinue to the products 2 days prior to your peel appointment.
It is recommended to
Not tan for 2 weeks prior
Discontinue retinol and high percentage AHAs and BHAs 2 days prior
Wax 3 days prior
Receive Botox or fillers 2 days prior
Will the peel application be painful?
No! While sensation is normal, it is more of a tingle or itch, not burning or stinging. You will rate the sensation of the peel on your skin on a 1 to 10 scale after application; this allows me to figure out how long to leave the peel on or how many layers are appropriate to apply during your appointment.
Will my skin peel?
Maybe. It varies from person to person and it's better described as flaking than peeling. If your skin does flake, you'll usually see it on day 3 and it will last a 2-3 days. If you'd like to see more flaking, we can customize your peel to encourage flaking. If you do see flaking, make sure to not pick at it!
Are there any post peel requirements?
You'll be given a post procedure kit after your appointment, which you will use for the 5-7 days
For 2 days after your peel
Stay as cool as possible
Avoid hot showers
Do not use hot tubs, steam rooms or saunas
Do not go swimming
Participate in activities that cause excessive perspiration
Direct a hair dryer at the treated area
apply ice or ice water to the treated area
It is recommended not to exfoliate or use retinols for 5-7 days after your appointment
Can I apply makeup after my peel?
As with all facial treatments, it is not recommended to apply makeup the day of the treatment to let your skin rest. The following day, you can use your normal makeup. If your makeup does not contain hydrating ingredients, your skin will likely feel dry.
How often can I receive a peel?
It depends on what peel we are using and what condition(s) we are treating. Jenn will customize the peel treatment plan and let you know when you can receive your next peel. Generally, it’s 2 to 4 weeks apart.
